Artist Statement

This piece is a children’s book that brings together some of the traditions, customs, and culture of my country Mexico. My book shows children the importance of heritage and how beautiful it is to know where you and your ancestors come from. Lucas is inspired by my nephew Fernando and this book is dedicated to him. Lucas is a staple to educate children and shows them his life while still entertaining them. He sheds a light on the importance of coming from immigrant parents that come to the United States to find a better life. It bridges the type of music, food, and decorations that are important to our Mexican heritage and country.

The use of vibrant colors in some areas of the pages brings forth the focal points and gives importance to what the children reading can learn with the visualization of these objects.

Knowing my heritage has been a key part to producing this book. I used my iPad to draw in an app named Sketchbook and I used Adobe Photoshop to add the text to the pages. With the use of my knowledge in design, illustration, and typography I was able to make this book appealing and eye-catching for children. I am giving a piece of my culture to children so they can venture off and find out about their own heritage and ethnic background because with a little curiosity, they are capable of learning where they come from.
